I'm baaaack!! Welcome to the first cookie set of 2024!! These are kinda special. I have returned with something new! I know, big surprise from me... haha. I am calling these cookies "special effects cookies" They are Margarita Lime flavored cookies AND the rims of the glasses and the popcorn have a mix of sanding sugar and salt on them so the cookies actually taste like a Margarita. Pretty cool. So let's start with the sketch and the recipe! Enjoy! Sketch & RecipeI've upgraded my sketches a bit by adding markers to the mix. It really adds depth to the sketch and you can see the sketch better overall. As for the recipe, it came out really good! They taste like lime! You can't really taste the tequila, I assume it mostly baked out, it wasn't much anyway. But they are reminiscent of a Margarita. You could always add more Tequila if you'd like!! Or make a glaze with a little Tequila and sprinkle salt on top. There are lots of ways you could go with this recipe. *You can find the printable recipe here **I actually had to make these Gluten Free so I did use Gluten Free flour but my basic recipe just uses AP Flour so you can use either based on your needs/desires. This is my first set since having Arthur, who is now 5 months old and I didn't get as many photos as I probably should have but it will take me a little while to get everything back in order. My main concern is finishing them in a timely manner for freshness so sometimes I don't get all the pictures done. But I can still walk through what I did as most of this is pretty easy. I decided to label these Special Effects.. I know they don't shoot flames or anything but the little added salt really changes and enhances the flavor of the "Margarita" and I think it's a pretty special effect... haha see what I did there. Happy Birthday! So there's nothing really special about this cookie. The only thing I want to note is that I do my lettering by hand so this isn't a font... it's Amanda-script haha. "Salted" and Buttered Popcorn CookieThe popcorn in this set was actually hubby's favorite cookie. I used a very thick royal icing and a star tip. I had to sculpt it a little bit with some fondant tools but it was pretty easy to do. I added a few gold pearl sprinkles to give the appearance of popcorn kernels. Then I painted it with a little yellow food coloring and vanilla extract and topped with the sanding sugar and salt mixture. Popcorn {Breakdown}I have been binging the Holiday and Spring Baking Championships and there was an episode that involved Popcorn. Of course by the time I went to create this set I couldn't find it... UGH.. But I remembered that she used a star tip and held it close to parchment and the buttercream came up over the tip and created this cool popcorn!! Well let me tell you it did not work with royal icing... hahaha BUT I was able to create it by molding it a bit with some fondant tools. I did use that same star tip and the same technique, it just needed a little tweaking since I was using Royal Icing. I added a few gold pearl sprinkles to give it a "kernal" effect. Then I painted on some yellow food coloring in places before sprinkling it with a mix of sanding sugar and cracked salt. I made a bunch of them so I could pick from the best ones before attatching them to my Popcorn cookie. I used a basic round tip to create a "bottom" to attatch the popcorn to on the cookie. If you look closely you can see how I attached the popcorn. I used a very thick royal icing. The same was used to create the popcorn. "Salted Margarita Cookies"I love how these came out! So all of the dough is flavored with lime. I used lime zest and a little lime juice. Nothing artificial though. Yuck. I also used a little Tequila but I didn't want to use too much and I think I undercompensated, which I'm fine with. ANYWAY. For these cookies I created a "salted" rim. I mixed together some clear/white sanding sugar and some cracked salt. That way they aren't too salty but you get a little pop of salt here and there with your lime. I did it on both the large and mini Margarita cookies. I *did not* add it to the sprinkles on the lime though. We will go over that next. I did use a mix of coarse kosher salt and pink himalayan salt which is why you might see a few pink specks, but it went really well with the set which also already had pink in it. Lime CookiesYou could probably guess how I did the rind but clarity is always nice to have just so you can be sure. So for these I piped a semi-thick dark green icing along the outside rim of the cookie and then I dipped it into dark green sprinkles. I love how fun these are! They came out so cute!! Double Decker Letter CookieThis one is pretty simple. I just "glued" (with icing) a small letter cookie onto another cookie. I wanted to do something different than just using royal icing so I went with this design. I may be doing this more in the future I think it's pretty cute. Naked Birthday CakesI do wish I would have snapped process photos of these but that's okay. I started with a thick white royal icing. I piped what you now see as the brown lines first. Once they dried I painted them with the same bronze paint that is all over this set. Once dried I filled the gaps with A LOT of thick royal icing and used an icing scraper to scrape the excess across the cookies. I didn't want to make more pink icing so I used the same thick white icing to pipe the flowers and then I painted them with pink food coloring and vanilla extract. Sprinkle PacketI love adding these little party favors. I usually can't reuse sprinkles I've set out already and used in my cookies so I enjoy gifting them in the box and I had some "popcorn" leftover as well. I love adding it in the box for decoration. They can be used for ice cream or anything else your heart desires to adorn with sprinkles. Not bad for my first set back!
I hope you all enjoyed this little set! Stay tuned for the next one! Much Love Amanda
