He also requested a Sonic cake... so mom to the rescue yet again lol.
I don't think they are posted here but, maybe in the future I will post them.
I have kind of a past with cakes.
Last year I made a Mario cake that was pretty cool and I also made a Star Trek themed cake for hubby one year that was pretty epic. I used fondant on both (homemade) and decided I was going to go a different route this year.
So I went to Pinterest and alas there are Sonic cakes.
I decided on the Sonic head. I don't know why. I just felt it.
It resonated with my soul I guess. Haha.
Long blog posts bore me so on with the show!
Ugh I have the hardest time starting things... but I decided I needed to draw this out first. I had the cakes baked.. they turned out well enough..
now how do I cut this thing?
I made 2, 8 inch circles with my handy dandy compass (I don't even know why I picked up one of these but I'm glad I did... I remember I grabbed it at the Dollar Tree for a whopping $1)
I also realize the sketch is realllly hard to see but it's just a rough sketch of Sonic so I could start to see this come to life.
There are about 8 gazillion pictures of Sonic's face online so I just picked one.
Now onto the cakes and the cutting.
I used just a sharp little pairing knife and cut the pieces out.. the cake cut pretty easy.
Cake is best worked with when cold. Fridge and/or freezer is ideal.
I ended up having to put it in the freezer because I baked the night before and covered it but, it ended up being too soft to work with properly so I stuck it in the freezer for about 30 minutes and it made everything really really easy.
So there you have the basic Sonic shape.
At this point I was pretty happy. That was one of the scariest parts for me.
And just for reference the piece on the side is what I was left with.
I didn't do anything special with it... I ate it. Haha.
Now onto the decorating!
I guess? Idk why I did steps... that's not really my thing y'all.
Using the reference photo I had I gauged the distance for his eyes...
I used his left ear as a starting point and I used basic vanilla frosting.
I actually used vanilla frosting for the whole cake I just added food coloring.
In the future I will definitely use gel food colors...
The blue that you see took me FOREVER.
The most annoying part of the whole process.
I had to go through a ton of colors to get that blue...
I used blue, turquoise, purple, red, black it was a HUGE process... I almost gave up at the "Sonic blue" but my son came in and saw me mixing and he approved so it worked out after all. As you see it CAN be done with food coloring but be prepared to mix like crazy and basically question your entire existence. haha.
As for the tan color I happened to have some Halloween icing left (unopened and not expired yet) that was a light orange and I just added some yellow but it could have been created with just food coloring no problem.
Probably just a drop of red would have been perfect with the yellow.
I didn't show it in the photos but if you look closely there is some highlighting on Sonic and all I did was add some vanilla frosting to the dark blue until it was a little lighter and added the highlights you see. I actually used a chopstick to add the highlights so nothing fancy haha.
Okay let's move on to the finishing features... eyes, smile and outlines!
Step 3 or something
Finishing the features.
I have used the gel writing type icing stuff before mostly for sugar cookies around the holidays, but I'm really not a fan. I don't know why.. personal preference I guess.
I just never really had much luck with it so the outline is also vanilla frosting with black food coloring.
The next issue was delivery because I needed it to be a thin line but the handy dandy ziploc bag handled it. I cut a tiny hole and tested it out on some wax paper first just to make sure I was getting the right flow and it worked great.
As for the eyes... my main concern was that he was going to look cross eyed haha
So I actually kinda drew them out first on the icing with a toothpick so that I could kinda see how it would look.
Again it's vanilla frosting and some green food coloring I think also used some Lime..
I had a set of neon food coloring which is also where the turquoise and purple came from in the blue.
I used a cake pop stick to create the eyes...
real professional tools going on lemme tell ya.
I did add some green sprinkles to the green frosting but honestly it didn't make a difference... I had planned on just doing his eyes black as the other cakes did but my son schooled me and let me know beforehand that the "new" Sonic has green eyes so of course... I had to deliver.
Oh and as you can see in the close up photo I did add some little highlights to his nose because it was getting lost and I wanted it to stand out a bit more.
I think it looks much better with the little highlights.
It's funny how the smallest things can make such a big difference.
And in the end it was all worth it.
My son was super stoked, which I did not expect after arguing with him for an hour in WalMart about what color "Sonic blue" was haha.
But he was impressed.
I also thought the candle placement looked pretty cool.
I definitely want to say that you can create great things on a budget.
Honestly I didn't go into this thinking about how cheap it would be, but this cake was created for probably less than $5 (depending on if you have food coloring or not already, if you don't then I'd say under $7) and a few hours of my time.
Granted, I realize not everyone has a few hours, but for what I created it's actually amazing how cheap it was and it wasn't as hard as some of the cakes I've created in the past.
Whether you use a $1 box cake or make one homemade it's still about $1 and I only used one container of frosting (also $1 -yup I used the cheap WalMart brand) and still had some left over. So you don't need a ton of things in order to create something awesome.
I just wanted to add that little tidbit in there because I can't imagine what a bakery would charge for something like this.. granted it would be worth it. I do believe a lot of work and talent goes into this type of thing, as a matter of fact I know it... but still---
I created it and it didn't cost me a fortune. I spent more on decorations.

Thanks for checking it out!
I hope you have an awesome day!
