So my VERY FIRST attempt at homemade pop tarts and I gotta say they came out awesome!! I use THIS RECIPE as my inspiration.
But alas it is what it is for now and we will just enjoy the bright green in it's final photo op. So starting with the pop tart dough.. tart.. stuff.
1/2 tsp Salt
1/2 tsp Honey (optional)
1/2 tsp Vanilla
1 C Butter or Shortening (or mix)
1/2 C Ice Cold Water
Nutella for filling.
First things first.. you basically make a pie dough. Combine all dry ingredients.. cut in butter until you get a crumbly mixture then add the ice water slowly until a ball forms. Then cut or use cookie cutters to create the desired shape!
I used about a tsp of filling.. you could probably use more as the filling stays put.. it didn't seem to spread at all and once they are cooked and cooled the Nutella firms up a bit almost just like a pop tart filling.. pretty nifty!
Anyway..... back to these..
Make sure they are good and sealed up!! And poke a few little holes in the top.
These reheat pretty awesomely in the toaster! You can also top with some more Nutella if you're really going for it lol
These are really tasty. They are basically Nutella Hand Pies.. but the whole wheat crust definitely makes a difference. It gives it that crunchy texture I like and it has a nutty flavor. Would definitely be great for any flavor pop tart you'd want to try.. Peanut Butter and Jelly.. Smores.. Fruit Varieties.. they would all rock your socks off that is for sure!! And being that they're homemade and not packed with sugar and preservatives, well besides the Nutella, I feel better about snacking on them.
Here is the original website again where the origin of this recipe stems from!
However since mine is a tad different and there's no printable version I decided to go ahead and create a printable version.. so feel free to print it off!!
Please let me know if you tried and like this or any other versions of pop tarts out there!!
Thanks for stopping by as always!
