I have successfully made shredded hash browns.. and I still make homemade french fries all the time.. but the Southern Style (the cube variety) are my favorite. As you see it CAN be done with food coloring but be prepared to mix like crazy and basically question your entire existence. haha.

As for the tan color I happened to have some Halloween icing left (unopened and not expired yet) that was a light orange and I just added some yellow but it could have been created with just food coloring no problem.
Probably just a drop of red would have been perfect with the yellow.

I didn't show it in the photos but if you look closely there is some highlighting on Sonic and all I did was add some vanilla frosting to the dark blue until it was a little lighter and added the highlights you see. I don't know why.. personal preference I guess.
I just never really had much luck with it so the outline is also vanilla frosting with black food coloring.

The next issue was delivery because I needed it to be a thin line but the handy dandy ziploc bag handled it. I cut a tiny hole and tested it out on some wax paper first just to make sure I was getting the right flow and it worked great.

As for the eyes... my main concern was that he was going to look cross eyed haha
So I actually kinda drew them out first on the icing with a toothpick so that I could kinda see how it would look.
Again it's vanilla frosting and some green food coloring I think also used some Lime..
I had a set of neon food coloring which is also where the turquoise and purple came from in the blue.
I used a cake pop stick to create the eyes...
real professional tools going on lemme tell ya.

I did add some green sprinkles to the green frosting but honestly it didn't make a difference... I had planned on just doing his eyes black as the other cakes did but my son schooled me and let me know beforehand that the "new" Sonic has green eyes so of course... I had to deliver.
Oh and as you can see in the close up photo I did add some little highlights to his nose because it was getting lost and I wanted it to stand out a bit more.
I think it looks much better with the little highlights.
It's funny how the smallest things can make such a big difference.

And in the end it was all worth it.
My son was super stoked, which I did not expect after arguing with him for an hour in WalMart about what color "Sonic blue" was haha.
But he was impressed.

I also thought the candle placement looked pretty cool.

So there ya go!
That's it!

***CLOSING COMMENT***
I definitely want to say that you can create great things on a budget.
Honestly I didn't go into this thinking about how cheap it would be, but this cake was created for probably less than $5 (depending on if you have food coloring or not already, if you don't then I'd say under $7) and a few hours of my time.
Granted, I realize not everyone has a few hours, but for what I created it's actually amazing how cheap it was and it wasn't as hard as some of the cakes I've created in the past.

Whether you use a $1 box cake or make one homemade it's still about $1 and I only used one container of frosting (also $1 -yup I used the cheap WalMart brand) and still had some left over. I have made a ton of these in many different varieties.. AP, Bread Flour.. Yeast.. No Yeast.. they all work out pretty good. I am sharing this one because it is the first time I used a whole wheat crust and it was really delicious. I am jumping on the #HealthierChoices bandwagon if there is one.. I probably shouldn't even reference that since I have no idea if it exists and what it stands for but hoping common sense won this battle we are just trying to eat more fruits and veggies and less sugar and junk food. So I have been trying out all my breads with wheat flour.. so far so good I gotta say.. I've made whole wheat waffles, sandwich bread, biscuits.. and I'm pretty proud of this one and I love pizza so I'm sharing this one with you for now!
Back to the ingredients.
Pizza stuff. You know. Sauce, cheese, veggies, meat whatever you want.
My kid just wanted sauce and cheese.. alrighty then.. easy enough I say.
But for myself I would probably add some mushrooms, bell peppers, olives..
All fantastic.
Oh also maybe olive oil. I used it on the edges before I crimped them because I'm a heavy flour user and sometimes it causes my edges to refuse to fuse.. and this worked great.. not a single one of my hot pockets lost any filling at all.
They all stayed sealed up. I think crimping on both sides is also very crucial to the success of this.

And I got leaps and bounds ahead of myself haha.
Divide up the dough.. it will smell so wonderful...
I started with 8 balls of dough and divided each one into 8 more pieces..
This is actually a lot more dough than it looks like it can really go a long way.
I played around with the sizes. You can divide them into 4 and make 2 per each ball for small calzones. For the Hot Pockets divide them into 4 and then divide them again into 8. That should make 24 I guess... you know what.. I don't know just divide it up and make some pizza pockets. Everything will be okay.

Now roll them out into whatever shape you desire.. you could probably even use cookie cutters if you wanted to.. whatever you like! Cooking is a huge art for me so I'm really not a very precise person .. I enjoy the process. But roll them out and prepare to stuff them with awesomeness!

And bam! I left about 1/2 inch around the entire outside and I brushed the outsides with olive oil before crimping. Crimp the first side really well and make sure your surface has plenty of flour and it should flip no problem.
Crimp the other side.

It's actually kind of hard to see in this photo but it is crimped nicely. The dough.
Now. These are a mix between whole wheat and white flour however, you can use any mix of flours you want. I have also created a Whole Wheat Nutella Pop Tart that also came out AMAZING. . . Those would be cool to check out too because I made them a litte differently. With these I wanted them to be more "authentic" -bleh-
Usually when I do something homemade the goal is to make it better than the original, not "like" the original.. but this is a special case. My son. He loves his pop tarts from Walmart.. so I had to make these as close to the real thing as I could without neglecting my own personal feelings towards them being just a smidge more "healthy" even though... lets be honest this is basically pie... but you know what.. it's wayyy healthier than what's in the box... read the ingredients... if you can... haha ;)

So anyway. The dough is as follows:
2 C Flour (I used 1 C Whole Wheat. 1 C AP)
1 tsp Sugar (or honey)
1 tsp Salt
1 tsp Corn Syrup (Optional)
1/2 C COLD Butter (I used half butter half shortening)
1/2 C Ice water

*PRINTABLE RECIPE BELOW*

You make these as if you were making a pie crust.. mix the dry ingredients and then add in the butter in cubes. I always use my hands just because it seems like the right thing to do... work in the butter until you get a crumb like mixture.
Slowly add in the water and mix until a ball of dough forms.
Roll out and cut to size as shown below.

For the filling I used Smuckers Strawberry Jam.

Next!
After rolling out and filling them I just carefully sealed the edges together.
(In hindsight there are a few things I would change about how I did this process... for one they DID leak.. so use foil just in case!!
Since I had to use a lot of flour while rolling them out the edges didn't seal very well. The next time I will use melted butter or olive oil on the edges to help seal them.
For the Nutella Pop Tarts I actually crimped the edges and I liked that look but once these were frosted I thought they looked totally cute too so it's all preference.. I can say the Nutella ones DID NOT leak but I don't know if that was because the Nutella is thicker or because of the crimped edges.. *GASP* I will have to test and find out or YOU can test it out and let me know!!
Either way here is how they looked fresh out of the oven prior to icing and sprinkling.

BAKE AT 375.
Time will vary depending upon how big you make them.. Just watch for the edges to turn a little brown and if you touch them on the top they should be firm..
You should be able to tap on them.

And!
Here they are! All jazzed up!
So before I start rambling on about how amazing these are let me show you how EASY the icing is... which is also HOMEMADE.

Icing:
1 C Powdered Sugar
2 tsp Milk
1 tsp Vanilla

That's it!! It will be weirdly thick but also thin.. I don't know.. it was my first time making homemade royal icing so I was pretty excited about the whole situation and how awesome they came out psh there's nothing better.
I mixed it up real quick in my Kitchen Aid with the whip attatchment.
And for the sprinkles, well I let my son do that part and he loved it!
I'm pretty sured he loved eating the Pop Tarts more though.

ALSO.
Here is something cool.
They freeze pretty well and I reheated them in the toaster without much issue..
I suppose if you are worried you could use a toaster oven, if you have one, I'm not a huge fan of the toaster oven or you could just pop them back in the oven for a bit..
I'm sure you could microwave them.

So there it is!! I did make these with regular hot dogs the first time but they just didn't taste right.. at least not for us. In a pinch (since they are cheaper, regular hot dogs do work they just don't taste like authentic corn dogs). So I decided to try the Hewbrew Nationals the next time.. and they were MUCH better. They just added something that was missing with the original recipe. Another ingredient I like to add is honey. I know I use honey a lot.. but the ones you buy at the store have the honey crust and I like it!! (Like I said before, this is our personal preference). I also found that using the toothpicks made them easier to fry and they came out really pretty!! I used just enough oil to cover them without the toothpicks being immersed. You may also want to use more than one package.. although I thought that one would be plenty since you are cutting them up into minis there were not leftovers. So after that experience I started buying multiple packages and making extra so that I could freeze them. They freeze well and can be baked in the oven again so they are nice and crispy... however if you're feeling lazy they can just as easily be microwaved for a late night snack or quick lunch.

I am loving these homemade ventures! I'm finding much satisfaction out of making our own homemade versions of our favorite foods rather than getting less for more and also a bunch of random ingredients.. at least when I make them at home I know exactly what goes in them.
Thanks for stopping by!
-VintageModMom

Homemade Potato Wedges {Amazing}

https://www.amandairl.com/fvsvmm/homemade-potato-wedges-amazing

https://www.amandairl.com/fvsvmm/homemade-potato-wedges-amazing#comments

SNACKS

 	 		 			 				 					 						          					 								 					 						  Yay! Hubbs loved them too!
They are sooo good!!!
And a tad bit easier than making french fries... although I will never not make french fries lol.

I also decided to try the seasoning that came with the recipe..
I normally make my own seasonings for things but I figured I'd give this one and go and it's FANTASTIC.

I didn't have any onion powder AND my coriander wasn't exactly ground up but it was still amazing. I also added some chili powder since it was going to be for a bbq meal.
You must try these! They are very simple and perfect for when you need a quick side.
I baked them exactly as the recipe said and they came out perfect...
they were crispy on the outside but soft like a french fry in the middle..
So awesome!
The only thing different about mine was a tweak in seasoning and I covered them in olive oil first.. the recipe used a dry seasoning, I used the seasoning but I covered them in olive oil first.. Probably because this is how I cook my french fries.. and because I just can't leave recipes the way they are lol.

Anyway.
I love them.
You should try them.

The recipe can be found here>>> OVEN ROASTED POTATO WEDGES.

Freezer Fries

https://www.amandairl.com/fvsvmm/freezer-fries

https://www.amandairl.com/fvsvmm/freezer-fries#comments

FREEZER

SNACKS

I picked up 10lbs of potatoes at the farmer's market for $5! (You can peel them I do soemtimes) I don't have a fancy cutting device or anything I just cut them with a kitchen knife. Once cut let them soak in cool water for an hour. (TOTALLY worth it!) After the hour is up, drain them and toss them a bit but not harshly.. you will notice their texture has changed. They are crispy. It's hard to explain but you will see. Anyway. Drizzle with oil and preferred seasonings and mix well, then place them on a well sprayed baking sheet.

Bake @ 400 for 30 minutes (also depends on how thick/thin you cut them if you cut them smaller you can cut the time in half)
*Check them after a few minutes you may want to flip them.

Once cooked let them cool then freeze on baking sheet for an hour or so, then transfer to freezer bag. Reheat in oven @ 350 for a few minutes (3-5). (May need more use your discretion).

❤ VintageModMom
